The Borehole Casings give structural integrity to the wall of the Borehole so that it does not collapse by controlling the movement of rock fragments, sand and gravel.
It also works as a cover for the water transfer pipes, safety rope, electrical wires as well as the pump itself. The casing also helps with ensuring that surface water and shallow groundwater (which might be polluted) do not mix with the groundwater.
1. JOINING BOREHOLE CASINGS: They are made in sections that are screwed together to form longer lengths. Each casing has male and female threading to ensure it is able to be connected to the next pipe section. Most often the male threads are covered with a thread protector (before assembly) to prevent any damage on the threads.
2. HOW DEEP SHOULD THE BOREHOLE CASING PIPE BE? Since the casing is mainly used for protection, its depth should be able to provide the necessary protection. As a rule of thumb, the Borehole Casing should case the Borehole from top to bottom. It should also be at least 2m below the pump. This protects the pump from the wall collapse whilst also preventing mud and sand from entering into the pump.

3. WHAT SHOULD MY CASING DIAMETER BE? The diameter of the borehole casing should be enough to fit the pump and clearance enough to cater for easy installation and maintenance. Borehole Casings in Zimbabwe come in sizes 110mm up to 250mm. The most popular sizes are 140mm and 180mm. These Borehole Casings also come in pressure classes, Pressure Class 6, Pressure Class 9 and Pressure Class 10.
4. HOW LONG SHOULD THE CASING PIPE BE? In unstable aquifers, it would be advisable to have the casing equal to the depth of the borehole (Casing from Top to Bottom.) Where there are rocks - depending on which one is greater - casings should be a depth of 20m minimum, below the ground or 10m into the bedrock.
5. STEEL OR PVC BOREHOLE CASING? Over the years (20th Century) steel has been the go-to choice for Borehole Casings, lately, with improvements to PVC, PVC has been the most common choice for casings.
The Borehole Casings are manufactured with selected PVC compounds to provide absolute non-corrosive pipes with excellent mechanical properties. The Borehole Casing must be strong enough to withstand underground pressures. That is why Nakiso Borehole Drilling prefers to use Pressure Class 9 and Pressure Class 10 for Borehole Casing. This is because Pressure Class 9 and Pressure Class 10 Casings are more Collapse Resistant (The strength of a Casing is often described as Collapse Resistance.)

However, it has to be noted that the choice of material depends on a number of things, such as the cost, governing standards, installation criteria and equipment being used to construct the well. The chemistry of the water and the geology are also important factors. The pH level is an important factor, high (alkaline) or low (acidic) levels corrode steel on the other hand PVC is chemically inert. Steel again is not ideal in conditions with high levels of salts, the steel may be corroded by processes such as electrolysis.
CARE FOR CASINGS: Extreme care is required when installing casings, casing material may crack due to excessive bending when subjected to compressive or tensile stresses.
Damaged Borehole Casings mean the Borehole’s structural integrity has been reduced, as a result, maintenance of equipment or installation equipment will not be an easy task.
